Informants is a multi-channel audio installation that
plays upon our thoughts about the future, how those views
date, how those views tie us to our sense of place, and
the need we have to build a narrative bridge between us
and our possibilities.
The work centres around the fact that as adults we often
make sweeping predictions ourselves, when the people who
live in the future are already here among us, in child
form. It presents edited and anonymised interview content
which is, in a playful way, an attempt to get them to
“report back” on what that future is like.
The Informants was originally presented at the 2015 Sound
Festival in Aberdeen for New Music Scotland's "In Cahoots"
conference, with the help of Struan Primary School and
Bun-Sgoil Shlèite on the Isle of Skye. The audio above is
excerpted from a second iteration, created with children
from the village of Kyleakin, next to the Skye bridge. It
was part of their creative response to exploring local
history with the Travelling The Archive project, created
by Nicky Bird with Atlas Arts.
